기획의도:

한국에선 아직 생경한 타 문화권을 소개하는 전시로 이전 후기 식민주의의 시선에서 국한된 타문화권에 대한 발견과 소개를 넘어, 같은 동시대인으로 삶의 가치있는 메세지를 공유하기 위한 자리로 거듭나고자 한다. 현대 미술의 언어로 재해석된 이번 전시는 타문화 소개와 예술가의 체험을 연계한 대안적인 방식으로, 이는 생경한 문화적 발견이 우리의 현재와 미래를 환기하고 의미를 재인식하는 값진 시간이 될 것이다.  

 

-예술가의 노마딕/ ROAMER, From Place to Place.

이번 도큐멘트 A가 기획한 전시의 의의는 새로운 문화권의 탐사를 이어가는 예술가의 이동/Roaming 활동에 의해 제시된 타문화의 소개와 그에 따른 작업의 발전과정을 한 자리에서 보여줌으로써, 예술가 각각의 관점들로 문화를 읽고, 기록하고, 보여주는 현대 사회의 Roamer로써의 역활을 드러낸다. 이를 통해 선보인 호주 원주민 예술의 발표는 이전 장식적인 이미지에 국한된 관점을 넘어, 새로운 문화적 가치와 동시대의 화자되어야할 철학을 공유하는 장의 중심으로 이전과는 다른 새로운 문화적 교류의 전시가 될 것이다.

 

- 호주 원주민/ 비문명과 문명의 사이 / Coexisting another world 호주의 예술, DreamingDreaming은 호주 인류의 태초의 시간(dream time)과 연결하는 호주 원주민 사회의 중심 개념이다. 각 개인의 삶에 부여받은 하나의 주제로 예술과 생활을 이어가는 삶의 주체적 역활을 하는 생활 철학이다. 이 드리밍은 각 주제의 정보를 기록하고 후손에게 전달하는 데이터를 담은 이미지로 2만년의 긴 시간동안 원주민 문화의 지혜를 전수하는 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 이것은 우리의 동양 문화와도 연관된 철학으로 자연과 조화가 중심 사상이던 아시아의 전통 관습과 그 맥락을 찾아 볼 수 있으며 삶의 중심이 되는 정체성의 의의를 다시 상기할수 있다. 우리는 이번 호주의 원주민 문화의 조망으로 현대사회에서 잊혀진 이전 가치를 환기하는 장이 되길 바라며 현대인의 삶의 비여있는 질문들을 채워주는 메신져의 역할이 되고자 한다.

 

전시구성:

5명의 예술가의 기록과 각각의 정리 방식으로 보여준다. 이 전시는 문화를 읽고 담아내고 보여주는 문화적 ‘뷰어’의 기능을 제시하고자 한다. 각 예술가의 관점으로 정리된 자료와 작업은 현지 문화의 내재된 의미 있는 메세지를 관통하는 메신져의 역활을 맡아 시각적인 전시 형태이자 인문학적 지형이 자연스럽게 드러난 전시로 구성하고자 한다 .

 

- 세부구성

 5섹션으로 각 파트에는 작가 리서치 작업+관련 학술글 =연계된 호주 원주민 작업으로 구성된다.

 

신지선 - 서사적 리서치 + 민속 = 원주민 페인팅 ex) 7sisters dreaming

이연숙 - 심리적 리서치 + 미술 = 원주민 조형 장식물 ex) 인형 및 수공품

장석준 - 상호적 리서치 + 사회 = 원주민 사진, 영상 작업 , 페인팅

염상훈 - 건축적 리서치 + 건축 = 허니앤트 ( 파푼야 마을 도시 계획도) 드리밍 작업

남지웅-  기록적 리서치 + 철학 = 원주민 벽화와 의식

 

신지선

 

 일상속에 숨어있는 이야기를 단서로 상상력을 통해 은유적인 경로로 재현하는 프로젝트를 진행해 온 신지선 작가는 호주 애보리진의 역사를 바탕으로 원주민의 사회적인 위치에 남아있는 감정들을 영국혈통의 개와 원주민의 부메랑놀이로 민감한 관계의 이야기를 서사적인 영상으로 풀어낸다. 또한 문화의 무형적 가치로 바라본 암석설화를 중심으로 호주와 한국의 공통된 정서를 찾고, 이를 미술사적으로 완벽한 형태로 바라본 세잔의 생빅트와르 산과 겸제 정선의 진경산수화를 공통된 연장선상에 놓고 재해석한 작업을 진행한다. 이것은 타자와 교류함으로써 발견된 정체성을 장소를 배경으로 찾아가는 과정이다.

 

이연숙

 

 현대 원주민의 생활방식 속에서 발견된 상징적 사물을 관찰하면서 축적된 시간과 공간을 개인 심리적 관점으로 기록한다. 원주민 입체 미술에서 흔히 보이는 자연에서 발견되는 사물의 반복적인 수집으로 완성된 설치물 또는 그대로 재현된 자연물 조각들은 원주민 문화 속에서 장식물 또는 우리의 기복신앙과 상징물 같은 의미를 가진다.  한국의 샤머니즘과 일맥상통하는 조형물들을 개인사적 기억과 그들의 dreaming에 내포된 문화적 요소들을 드러내는 심리적인 풍경으로 입체구조물과 내부 설치로 표현하고자 한다.

 

장석준

 

 이미지의 수집을 통해 특정 지역의 사회적 풍경을 그려내는 장석준 작가는 원주민 공간의 현재의 모습이 담긴 사진과 영상 자료들의 정리하여 사회적 관습의 상호성을 보여준다. 현지의 답사 기간동안 모여진 사진과 영상 자료들은 호주 원주민 사회의 관습적 규칙에 의해 재선별과 수정 편집하는 과정을 만들어, 문화를 읽고 시각화하는 새로운 비젼을 제시하고자 한다. 이러한 리서치 기록과 그 정리의 방식으로 원주민 문화에 현재를 읽고 또 변화하는 매체에 대한 관계를 읽을 수 있을 것이다. 

 

염상훈

 

 지리적 영향에 따른 토착적 생활양식을 리서치하고 이를 대안적인 건축으로 만들어 온 염상훈 건축가는 애보리진의 타운에서 특징되는 구성 요소들을 분류해 재배치와 재배열의 구조를 찾아 현대 소규모 공동체 마을에 적용 가능한 대안적 모델을 2d 작업을 통해 시뮬레이션으로 제작한다. 에버리진 페인팅에 있는 지도의 기능을 프로그램을 통해 재해석 하여 현실에 적용가능한 맵핑 시스템을 구상한다.

 

남지웅

 

 프로젝트 구성원의 현지 활동과 인터뷰 중심으로 진행되는 다큐멘터리 영상으로, 객관화된 관찰자의 시점으로 현장에서 진행되는 사건들을 담고 재편집한 영상을 제작한다. 도큐멘트 A그룹의 작가와 애보리진 작가들의 교류를 통해 예술가로서의 소통을 엿 보며 각각의 작업들이 발전해 나가는 과정을 그려낼 것이다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“YOUA Dreaming”_documentA

 

Purpose:

YOUA Dreaming is an exhibition introducing cultures that are still unfamiliar to Korea. It aims to go beyond the limited perspectives of existing post-colonial views in discovering and introducing other cultures, and provide a platform in which we can share valuable messages of life as contemporaries. This project, which has been re-translated through the language of contemporary art, is an alternative that brings together the introduction of other cultures and the experiences of the artists. This will be a valuable opportunity in which the discovery of unfamiliar cultures will enable us to refresh our awareness to our present and the future, and their meanings.

 

Nomadic of artists/ROAMER, From Place to Place.

 

The significance of the exhibition planned by Document A is in the introduction of other cultures suggested through the artist’s movement/roaming activities that is in lines with the exploration of new cultural areas, and by showing the development process of the project in one place. Moreover, the significance is also in its role of a “Roamer” of contemporary society by showing how each artist read, recorded, and reflected the culture. The presentation of Aborigine’s art through this project goes beyond the limited perspective of previous decorative image, and is expected to be an exhibition providing a new way of cultural exchange.

Australia’s Art

 

“Dreaming” is a concept grounded in aboriginal society that relates to the “dream time” (i.e., the beginning of time) of Australian’s humankind.

As one of the themes that an individual receive as a part of life, this is a life philosophy that plays a principal role in connecting the arts and life.

“Dreaming” contains images of data that are records of the information of each issue to transfer to the next generation. It plays an important role in passing along the wisdom of the native’s culture that was captured during the two years. 

This philosophy also relates to our Asian culture, where it connects with the traditional Asian culture that holds at its core of being in harmony with nature. Moreover, this reminds us with the significance of identity, which is the focus of life. 

 Through the attention on aborigine’s culture, we hope that this project will be an opportunity of reminding us with values that have been forgotten in modern society. Moreover, we hope that this exhibition will be a messenger of providing answers to questions that have been unanswered in the lives of contemporary men.

 

Exhibition composition

 

 The exhibition is displayed through the records and organizations of each five artists individually.

This exhibition suggests to be a cultural “viewer” that reads and captures the culture.

The material and work that have been organized through each artist’s perspective play a role of a messenger that penetrates the meanings that are instilled in the native culture. It takes the form of a visual exhibition and seeks to organize the exhibition such that the humanity is naturally reflected.

 

The data and art work by each artists’ view taking a role as a messenger with meaningful idea would like to consist certain visual form of exhibition and humanities.

 

Detailed composition 

It is composed of five sections, in which each part consists of an artist’s research project and related academic writings. = It is composed of matching Aborigine’s project.

 

-Ji Sun Shin - narrative research + folklore = aboriginal painting

-Yeon Sook Lee – psychological research + art = aboriginal sculpture 

Ex) dolls and handcraft

 

-Suk Joon Jang – interactive research + society = aborigine photo, image project, painting

 

-Sang Hoon Youm – architectural research + architect = Honey ant (Pupanya village planning map) Dreaming project

 

-Ji Woong Nam – documentary research + philosophy = aboriginal wall-paintng and ceremony

 

Ji Sun Shin

 

In this project Ji Sun Shin has reproduced the clues that are hidden in daily life through imagination and through metaphoric channels. Based on Australia aborigin’s history, she visually narrates the sensitive story of the emotions that are embedded in the native’s social position through a boomerang play between a British-blood dog and a native. Moreover, with a focus on rock story by viewing culture that has intangible value, she finds commonality between the Australian and Korean sentiments. Moreover, she proceeds the project by putting the work of <la montagne sainte vitoire> by Cezanne that viewed this as a perfect artistic form and the “real landscape painting” by GyumJae Jung Sung on the same extension and through its re-interpreation. This is a process of discovering identity through the interactions with others in light of a particular background.

 

Yeon Sook Lee

 

Yeon Sook Lee records the time and space that have accumulated from observing symbolic objects that have been discovered in contemporary aboriginal’s daily life through the artists’ psychological perspective. Through repeated collection of objects that are easily observed in the nature for native’s 3-dimensional art, the completed installation or the representation of the natural objects are equivalent to the decorations in the native culture or Korean shamanism. These objects, which are in line with Korean shamanism, reflect cultural factors that are embedded in individual memory and their “dreaming”. They reflect the psychological space, and the artist sought to express them through 3-dimensional objects and internal installations.

 

Suk Joon Jang

 

Suk Joon Jang, delineate the social landscape of a particular region by collecting images. By organizing pictures and visual materials that capture the natives’ current space, she shows the reciprocity of social customs. She proposes a new vision of reading and visualizing culture by creating a process of re-selecting and revising based on the aboriginal society’s conventional principles. Through such research method of keeping records and through the organizing procedure, we are able to read the present aborigin’s culture, and its relationship with evolving media.  

 

Sang Hoon Youm

 

Architect, Sang Hoon Youm has researched indigenous lifestyles that have been formed by geographic influences, and has proposed these as alternative architecture. He categorized the unique characteristics that composes the aboriginal town and found structures through reassignment and rearrangement. Through this he constructed an alternative model that is applicable to contemporary small communities through 2-dimensional project. Through re-interpreting the map functions that are in aborigine’s paintings, he develops an applicable mapping system. 

 

Ji Woong Nam

 

Based on the project member’s field activities and interviews, Nam Ji Woong produces a documentary from an objective observer’s view that captures and edits events that occurred in the field. Through the interactions between the Document A group’s artists and aborigine’s artists, it provides a glimpse of artistic interactions, and illustrates the development processes of each project.
